For a number of decades, Royal Ascot has been highly regarded for its firmly formal dress code. If you and your girlfriends are preparing a visit to Ascot for Ladies Day, or any of the other days during the five-day race meeting, you’ll be interested to hear the racecourse has recently announced its dress code for 2017.
Choosing your outfit is equally as important as picking winners at Ascot; it’s one of the most exclusive sporting events in the British calendar and is an undeniable parade of fashionistas, particularly on Ladies Day.

A trip to Royal Ascot simply demands that you go to town on your outfit and dress to impress. It’s not every day you get to do so, but if you hold a golden ticket to one of the more exclusive enclosures at Royal Ascot you’ll need the necessary attire to get through the entrance doors.
Earlier this month, the style guide for Royal Ascot 2017 was published by the racecourse organisers, featuring one important piece of news. From this year onwards, jumpsuits will be permitted in the Royal Enclosure – Ascot’s most elite enclosure, famed for its sartorial elegance. Members of the Royal Family will be present throughout the five days of Grade 1 racing action, so it’s a big move to allow for jumpsuits to be worn in their presence!
Jumpsuits are more of a traditional staple on the catwalks and high streets today, but the racecourse organisers have revealed they took advice from experts in the fashion industry before seeking approval from the Royal Ascot board.

If you’re thinking of turning heads with a sleek jumpsuit in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot this year, you should know that the style guide states any jumpsuit worn here must be full length. We recommend pairing a jumpsuit a pair of wide-legged trousers for truly classy look. Take note that, according to the guide, cropped lengths are more acceptable in the Queen Anne Enclosure.
The key fashion tips to adhere to at Royal Ascot 2017
- Ensure skirts and dresses are of an acceptable length, defined as flowing just above the knee or lower.
- Should you choose a strappy top or dress, ensure the straps are at least one inch wide or greater.
- Wear pashminas and jackets if you wish, but make sure any tops or dresses beneath them are compliant with the Royal Enclosure and Grandstand Admission dress codes.
- The event welcomes trouser suits, but these must be of matching colour and material, worn with a complementary top that’s not strapless or sheer.
- Hats, headpieces or fascinators must be worn at all times. Note: Headpieces with a base of four inches’ minimum are acceptable as a hat alternative.

Of course, fashion plays a huge part of Royal Ascot, but so too do the horses! If you’re thinking of surprising your girlfriends by swotting up on the potential runners and riders, bookmakers like BetStars offer postante markers, allowing you to take an early price on a horse you like the sound of before you’ve even arrived at Ascot.
