The Cheltenham Festival is over for another year and attention now turns to April’s Grand National meeting at Aintree. Every year, racing fans and fashion gurus flock to Liverpool for three days of exciting racing and fabulous frocks.
Some of the classiest racehorses in the business, including Vieux Lion Rouge, currently 10/1 to win the Grand National, will compete over the three-day event. Our focus, however, will be on the fashion side of things: the city of Liverpool will be ready to impress come April 6th – the opening day of the meet.
Without a doubt, the biggest day for fashion is Ladies Day on the Friday. Gentlemen are welcome of course but this is the day for Liverpool’s beauties to get dressed up for one of the finest events on the city’s calendar.
If you’re heading down to Aintree for this year’s festival, fear not: we have your back. Check out our style tips below…
Go All Out
For the ladies: make sure to take as much time as you need to get the perfect dress, start your hair early on the day and sort your fake tan out. There’s no need to get up midway through the night, but taking the time to look your best is well worth it; you may even stand a chance of winning the ‘Best Dressed’ award at the meeting…
Meanwhile, males should invest in a new suit and trim the beard before heading to one of racing’s finest events. Yes, this isn’t Royal Ascot, but race-goers should still make sure they are looking their best. And what better way than to get suited up before enjoying a day of racing with your mates?
Tweed is Always a Good Shout
National Hunt racing fans will already know this, but tweed is very popular and you will see a lot of it at Aintree. It is probably more suitable for the Cheltenham Festival but there’s no harm in adding some tweed to your wardrobe; you will fit right in with the regulars and also look stylish: it is a win-win.
Gents may opt for a tweed jacket or a hat whilst ladies may consider a cardigan; that way, it adds something different to the outfit without taking anything away from your dress. Tweed won’t go with everything, though, so don’t just wear it for the sake of wearing it. That being said, you will see a number of classy women wearing tweed in some capacity at almost every racecourse.

Wear Suitable Footwear
Again, this is tailored to the ladies more than the gents. High heels are fantastic for nights out but they’re not practical, especially if you have to walk across the turf. Wedges may be a better option or simply take a pair of flats for walking around in, before switching to heels on the concourse itself.
Shoes are a key component of any outfit, so be sure to purchase matching heels to go with your dress; that way, you will look like the complete package. For those drinking, remember to enjoy a beverage in moderation and be especially careful if you’re in heels. You don’t want your Aintree experience to be tarnished by ending up in hospital with a dodgy ankle!
