The Breeders’ Cup has teamed up with the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board to create a pop-up horse art exhibition scattered across LA. The exhibition was created in collaboration with Crewest Studio and five notable Los Angeles artists, allowing each artist to use a life-size, six foot tall horse statue as their canvas. Each horse features the personal style of its respective artist and reflects attributes of the community where it is displayed.
Beginning Thursday, Oct. 6 and lasting through the month of October, Angelenos can see the “art horses” posted up at various L.A. locations. After that you can catch them at Santa Anita Park where they will be on display for the 33rd running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, Nov. 4-5, 2016.
While exploring around LA, catch a snap of one of these horses and send it to discoverLAsnaps on Snapchat for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Breeders’ Cup!
In Perishing Square you can find ‘Pony Up’, a colorful and graphic piece by artist and founder of L.A.’s Crewest Gallery, Man One. Man One first developed his skills as a graffiti artist in the streets of L.A. and later advanced his talents as a fine artist at Loyola Marymount University. You can now find his signature brushstrokes all around the world – in books, museums, and even commercial work for MTV, Coca Cola and Disney.
Wandering through the Bank of America Plaza in Downtown Los Angelese, you can’t miss this prickly pony! Andre Miripolsky carefully coated his purple horse in hundreds of white dotted 3-D spines to create “Prickles.” Miripolsky’s keen understanding of pop imagery and dynamic personal energy launched a career that resulted in work with Elton John, Bette Midler, Quincy Jones, The Rolling Stones, Beastie Boys, Cheap Trick, and MTV.
Stop by Westfield Fashion Square, to see “Beauty at the Races” by Yolanda González. A graduate of the prestigious Pasadena Art Center College of Design, González created painterly portraits depicting the lavish hats and elegant fashion of race day. She has created work around the world, gathering inspiration through her travels, and shares her skills by teaching with Inner City Arts, Para Los Ninos, Plaza de La Raza, and the Crenshaw Christian Center.
If you’re shopping around at Westfield Santa Anita, you may come across “Stardust” by Clinton Bopp. Connecting plants, animals, and humans in a mystical swirl of color, this dynamic piece was created with acrylic, spray paint, and oils. Bopp is a New Zealand-born painter, muralist, stone/wood carver, sculptor, designer, set designer, restorer and teacher working in themes that meld social and mystic revelations.
The Equestrian Center in Griffith Park features “Racing With Time”, a modern realist horse by Michael Massenburg. Massenburg has completed many public art collaborations including projects with ESPN, the American Jazz Museum and Metro, and many others. Born in San Diego and raised in Los Angeles, Massenburg has exhibited in galleries and museums, completed private commissions, is the recipient of various grants. In addition to his art making practices, Massenburg is a teaching artist for various organizations and is founding board member board president for the Inglewood Cultural Arts nonprofit.
The five artists chosen for this project display a beautiful range of work that reflects the unique and thriving artist community of Los Angeles. Be on the lookout for their creations and be sure to snap a photo to discoverLAsnaps on Snapchat for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Breeders’ Cup!
