Racing at Goodwood dates back to the 19th century and the huge land has seen many other sports played out including car racing and cricket. The venue is known as one of the prestigious events thus named ‘Glorious Goodwood’ and this has stuck over the years. Sponsored by Qatar the prize money exceeds over a million and brings with is the best horses in training.
Sussex Stakes
One of the top races across the five days at Glorious Goodwood is the Sussex Stakes which is a group 1 race open to three year olds and older. Run over a Mile and 609 meters to be precise, the race has seen some notable winners over the years including Frankel who won the race in 2011 and 2012. This is one of the top races for 1 mile specialists and trainers will identify this race when plotting where to run their horses across a season. Late Sir Henry Cecil really enjoyed this race winning it seven times. Including Frankel’s success, other notable wins included Ali-Royal and Distant view.
Last year’s winner of the race was Too Darn Hot trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori and owned by the famous Lord Lloyd-Webber. The horse is one of the many favourites from Gosden’s stable and will run elsewhere this year to add to the number of wins.
Siskin favourite for 2020 running of Sussex Stakes
The favourite for this year’s race is Siskin a three year old horse with five wins from five races, four of which have come at Curragh in Ireland. Trained by GM Lyons and owned by Khallid Abdullah, who also has a very good record in this race, Siskin has one all races over 6 furlongs, so this extra trip at a new course will be a test. The most recent win for Siskin was taking the Irish 2000 Guineas and in doing so frustrating fellow Irish Trainer Aidan O’Brien.
Next in the betting is Mohaather, a British horse with 4 wins from 7 races. After winning the Summer Mile at Ascot over 1 mile by over three lengths, this horse is primed for the race and will take all the beating. The way the horse finished the race would have impressed many and thus is second favourite for the race at Goodwood.

Winner of the 2000 Guineas Kameko has been entered into this race and is likely to be suited to this racecourse and land another group 1 victory. After a good first season with two wins as a two year old trainer Andrew Balding was confident going into the 2000 Guineas and at 10/1 to win delivered a great final few furlongs to land the big prize. Unfortunately, the Investec Derby was too much for the horse and whether it was the track or the extra 3 furlongs in the race it seems Kameko is suited to around the 1 Mile distance.
The final horse to mention in this race is Circus Maximus, trained by the main man Aidan O’Brien. After winning Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot over a mile, this 4 year old horse may well be the outsider who can deliver a win in the race after finished 2nd to Too Darn Hot last year. Beaten by only half a length Circus Maximus has a big chance in the race.
Tips for Sussex Stakes
For Sussex Stakes, Siskin is 7/4 (2.75) + 275 to win the race and maintain a 100% record and a sixth consecutive win. Our tip for the race is Circus Maximus who finished runner up last year and after a win at Ascot a month ago can land this group 1 race at odds of 13/2 (7.5) +750.
