We are thrilled to share this exciting Q&A with world-renowned hunter/jumper equestrian, Brianne Goutal. “I still remember horse showing with Brianne back in the pony hunter days at Winter Equestrian Festival,” stated Ashley Cline of EquestrianStylist.com. Brianne’s style in and out of the horse show ring showcases a classic and elegant look. Her poise and class shine through her personality, style, and magnificent riding. Enjoy the behind-the-scenes interview with Brianne Goutal below.
1) How has being a rider influenced your fashion in the ring and after riding?
I think that my time riding has influenced my fashion in the ring and after riding on a practicality level. I would like to think that when I am shopping, I have become more levelheaded and realistic. I don’t like to buy or wear anything that is unnecessary or cumbersome and I like clothes that function well and have multiple uses. By that, I mean the quality of the material and the number of times I can wear the piece. I want to be able to wear these for everyday use.
2) What is “trending” in equestrian apparel from a Grand Prix jumper standpoint?
What’s “trending” always changes in fashion and that is no different in equestrian fashion. While the sport is classic and the apparel mimics the tradition of the sport with clothing that never goes out of style, recently, we have seen a new wave of high-tech fabrics and approaches. In general, we use to wear wool coats, breeches with no stretch and heavy materials. Now, coats are made out of microfiber and light/cooling fabrics are being utilized. It is a hard compromise for apparel companies to go into unchartered territory by using new and high tech materials whilst remaining true to the history and traditional side of the sport.
3) As a showjumping rider, in your free time do you enjoy going to other equestrian-recognized events like Racing, Polo, Dressage, 3-Day Eventing, Driving, etc.?
I would love to do it all, but unfortunately there are not enough hours in the day! When I’m not riding, I train clients, prepare to be a mother and catch up on much needed sleep. Once in awhile I will go to a polo game or to a Dressage event in Wellington when I am down for WEF!
4) How do you think spectators should dress at a Grand Prix at the Winter Equestrian Festival?
I believe that everyone should be comfortable both physically and socially, as that is the credo I live by. However, the dress code at a WEF Grand Prix depends on what classes you are going to watch. Night classes are dressier than day classes.
5) How do you think spectators should dress at a Polo event in Wellington?
It’s entirely up to the individual. Something stylish and that won’t blow too much in the wind. The one rule to live by would be wear flats or wedges. High-heels on grass are not a good combination.
6) Do you have a favorite “Fashion season”?
My favorite “Fashion season” is the fall. I think it’s the most chic season for clothing. I don’t think anyone could argue that sweater weather and pumpkin spice lattes aren’t the best! I love being able to throw on a light jacket and scarf which keeps me warm in the cooling night air.
7) What are your favorite shoes to wear after wearing your riding boots all day?
I’m always looking for my Superga sneakers after riding!
8) What’s your favorite accessory?
My oversize Bottega tote.
9) Favorite piece of clothing your horse wears (could be anything: blanket, fly mask, boots, etc…)
I’m obsessed with neatness and consistency throughout horse clothing. My favorite individual piece for my horse would probably be their show coolers.
