With bright color and bold brushstrokes, equestrian artist Paul Griffin brings to life his equine subjects and effortlessly captures the power, beauty, and unique characteristics of each one. His dynamic paintings convey a grace of movement and a captivating sense of drama. Along with custom horse portraits for owners and riders, Paul has painted many legendary racehorses, including California Chrome, Secretariat, and American Pharoah. We were excited to have the opportunity to find out more about his work and creative process in a recent interview. Read on below…
Q: Can you give us a brief intro to you and your artwork? How long have you been painting?
A: I am an artist located in Lititz, PA, and come from a family of artists. I have enjoyed painting animals, landscapes, portraits, wildlife and seascapes my entire life since grade school, and have exhibited my work in various shows throughout the tri-state area of NY, NJ and PA.
Q: Were you always paintings horses, and if not when did the equestrian influence begin?
A: My interest in equestrian art grew from attending polo games in the Hamptons and other locations, plus my friendship with various breeders and trainers further spurred my love of horses. This has been for about 10 years, but more intense focus has occurred over the last few years.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your creative process?
A: I have a unique style of painting, using bright color and form to create images that are memorable and endearing, especially to the horse owner. Each horse of course has certain unique characteristics which identify it, and I endeavor to focus on those elements. I only use the 3 primary colors (red, blue, yellow) on my pallet, plus white, to mix and create all my full range of colors, even the darkest shades.
Q: Can you share a little about your gallery barn?
A: The space I use for a gallery is a traditional bank barn, formerly used for cattle, hay and farming equipment. I now use the upper section as a gallery, to show my art to prospective buyers and collectors.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on a dramatic fairly large painting (48″×60″) of a horse in a field during a dynamic storm.
Q: Anything extra you’d like to share that is unique about you or your art?
A: I thoroughly enjoy the craft of painting, and I hope that pleasure and joy is reflected through in the finished work.
