Fall 2014 New York Fashion Week Trends
New York Fashion Week rules. I mean that quite literally. As the premier fashion event in the United States, NYFW (otherwise known as Mercedes Benz Fashion Week) is the force that lays down the fashion trends we will follow nearly eight months down the line. Top designers and models rock the runway with spectacle and drama; buyers, bloggers, and the press watch on, discerning what’s in and what’s out. Here at Equestrian Stylist, we’ve studied the looks to bring these trends to light. Here’s what you’re going to see making its way to storefronts across the United States:
Geometric Prints
Dianne Von Furstenberg hammered in this point better than anyone else. Not only did DVF fashion sport this digitally inspired look, but the floor set did as well. Countless other designers were on the same wavelength…We loved Carolina Herrera’s edgy repetition of shapes.
Think about this trend as you buy for upcoming derbies, polo matches and other equestrian events. This trend is up and coming– you’ll see it as you hit the stores, even well before the winter season.
Don’t be surprised if you start seeing graphic inspired designs displayed by your favorite equestrian brands. We’re loving the new collection that Rönner has to offer. Can you see the influence of the geometric prints?
We couldn’t resist putting in this short dress by Leila Rose, a surefire hit in our book. Even the simple polka dot design is a hot pattern. The mesh front would look stunning with a fascinator of a similar style.
Black Skirt/ White Top
Numrous designers chose to present the black/white dichotomy. We saw this in many different forms, but most often in the form of a neutral off-white top and a long, elegant skirt. This style has a ladylike equestrian feel to it, almost like a sidesaddle habit. Check out the similarities between those above and the equestrian inspired looks shown in Town and Country Magazine’s blog:
Fur
Fur is big this season. We saw it repeated in various forms: hats, scarves, tops, coats, and even mitts. The comeback of the mitt was one of the more surprising elements of show. Tory Burch showed no fear in presenting this odd accessory, and they did it with style!
Son Jung Wan blew us away with this fur masterpiece below…
For the Love of Gold:
A perfect segue to our next topic: feast your eyes upon Badgley Mischka’s gold dress with a fabulous fur head piece.
Stemming from the Superbowl and Bruno Mars’ fab golden ensemble, we knew the gold trend wasn’t going away anytime soon. At New York Fashion Week, we see a trend in the formal gold dress, with many designers choosing it as a perfect way to make a bold statement. That gold dress you’ve had your eye on isn’t just for New Year’s Eve anymore.
Equestrian Style Sightings
This year, we saw elements of the equestrian style coming from some unusual sources. Though the classic equestrian designer Ralph Lauren skipped out entirely on showing his equestrian inspiration, a few other names incorporated it. Take Wendi Nicole, for example. She definitely didn’t take a preppy approach to equestrian style, siding instead with a dark, Victorian look. In each piece, she paired the velvet hunt cap to unify the collection.
Tory Burch was the only designer to directly reference the horse. Take a look at the white shirt beneath the sweater on the left. The shirt in the middle photo obviously references the design of the horse bit. Absolutely loving the leather strapped fur hand warmer… trop chic!
Cushnie et Ochs went with a western flair to accent a classic style on the runway…
Ladies and gentlemen, NYFW has spoken. The trends are out there. Now, all we have to do is watch them appear on the shelves, scoop them up, and accessorize them with our unique equestrian accents.
