2019 has been an incredible year in the horse racing world with a number of record breaking performances. Saudi Arabia have announced their new $20 million Saudi Cup, which will be the world’s richest horse race and surpass the Pegasus World Cup. The flat season is also now coming to an end, with anticipation building ahead of the next national hunt season in Britain. Here we cover the key remaining fixtures over the latter period of 2019.
QIPCO British Champions Day
Saturday 19th October
The finale of the British flat season as Ascot hosts the QIPCO British Champions day. Many of the top horses and jockeys will be travelling over from around the world to compete for the £4.2 million purse on offer. This sees six races on the day headed by the Champion stakes. This will again be the richest day in British racing, with spectators tuning in from around the globe. The current favourite for the Champion stakes is Magical but the globetrotting Benbatl could also provide a key challenge following his eye-catching comeback.
Breeders’ Cup
Friday 1st November – Saturday 2nd November
The 2019 Breeders’ Cup meeting will again be taking place at Santa Anita. This will see many of the top European horses heading over to face off against the home team. This is always a hugely popular event with spectators from around the world. It takes place over two days and 14 races in total, with the Breeders’ Cup classic headlining the meeting. The Open – November Meeting
Friday 15th November – Sunday 17th November
The November meeting brings a start to the national hunt season in Britain and is one of the bigger jumps meetings to take place over the season. This is always a well-attended event across the three days and gives a first glimpse of some of the stars for the year ahead.
Ladbrokes Winter Carnival
Friday 29th November – Saturday 30th November
The biggest meeting of the year for Newbury racecourse over the two days at the end of November. This is headed by the Ladbrokes Trophy on the Saturday and could we yet see a future Gold Cup winner landing the race again, such as Denman did.
The Betfair Tingle Creek Christmas Festival
Friday 6th December – Saturday 7th December
Another two days of fantastic racing, headed by the Grade 1 Betfair Tingle Creek Chase. The other Grade 1 is the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, with the meeting always attracting vast crowds of racing fans. The current star of national hunt racing is Altior, who was the winner of the race last season.
32Red Christmas Festival
Thursday 26th December – Friday 27th December
Another hugely popular race meeting, with the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase being the key race of the meeting. This is also one of the main races of the season and another step to the ‘Triple Crown’. Other key races across the two days include the Christmas hurdle and the Desert Orchid Chase.
