It was an extremely dominating and successful weekend for the College of Charleston Equestrian team. The “Cougars” equestrian team furthered its reputation as one of the top teams in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association by a first-place finish hosting the Zone 5 Region 3 show. “You guys killed it,” explained coach Bob Story from Storybook Farm in Charleston, South Carolina. It was a cool and overcast day at the farm, but the horses participated just as if it were a normal day in the ring.
There are over 40 women students involved in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Equestrian team at College of Charleston. This past weekend, the Cougars were represented by 19 total riders in 18 classes and championed over half of them on Saturday.
These girls sure looked sharp in matching embroidered all weather proof jackets by Boathouse … This equestrian team loves to stay in-style even at the horse shows. “Everything I have is monogramed, and… super preppy,” explained Lexi Rider on her personal style. She was instantly called out as the “team fashionista” by her fellow teammates. Claiming both High Point Rider and Reserve High Point Rider were: Zoe Merritt and Eliza Hay, respectively. Merritt was best-in-show in both the Open Flat (Section A) and Open Fences (Section A) while Hay took the blue ribbon in the Open Fences (Section B) and finished second in her flat event.
Other first-place finishers for CofC were Christina Couper in the Intermediate Flat (Section A), Emily McKee in the Intermediate Flat (Section B), Annie Carr in the Novice Flat (Section A), Kenzie Russell in the Novice Flat (Section C), Trudy Noll in the Novice Fences (Section B), Laura Smith in the Advanced Walk, Trot, Canter (Section A), and Charlotte Pinckney in the Advanced Walk, Trot, Canter (Section C).
Post-show, the team gathered around and chanted the official team cheer: a tradition at every end to each show. “It’s all about competing and doing it the right way, and I’m so proud of all of you all,” stated Coach Bob. It takes dedication, commitment and teamwork to ride competitively in college. These women know that the hard work pays off, and the friendships last a lifetime.
