How do you know when your horse loves you? When she decides to roll in the mud right before you show up to the barn… Only because he wants to spend more time with you as you must give him a bath now! We’ve all been there, right!? Well, we’ve found the tools that can make grooming and bathing fun, easy, and fast. We recently gave the large pony, Daphne-Doo a makeover on the farm in Ocala.
After bringing her in from the pasture, I realized I had my work cut out for me in terms of grooming. She really needed some extra spring cleaning…
I absolutely love grooming, and this was a much-needed makeover. Daphne has been enjoying her down time in Ocala getting lots of pasture time with her pals. There’s nothing like spending a few hours with your horse in the afternoon and really scrubbing them down. It’s so rewarding seeing the results afterwards…
As you can see, she was not only dusty, but covered in sweat, mud, and dirt! She surely enjoyed her day out.
So, I quickly got to work. The first product I used is the Slick n Easy Grooming Block by Farnam. This is a wonderful tool for not only grooming, but also shedding! It slicks away the dirt, dust, grime and hairs and really makes the shine in the coat come out.
Once I got the initial dirt out, I sprayed her down with water to give her a nice wet base to work with. I checked her over for any dandruff or flaky skin that needed to be assessed. I always double check feet, ankles, and legs, because they are so important!
Then, I poured a small amount of the the Vetrolin Hydrating Conditioning Shampoo into the bucket and made a nice soapy bucket wash.
I use an all natural sponge to help hold the suds and really scrub deep. Daphne has a small white bobby sock behind, so I spent some extra time working on getting that sparkling clean.
After she was all soaped up, I took the hose and sprayed her down. After all of the soaps gone, then the drying and detangling process begins. This is the fun part, I think! I love shining, smoothing, and detangling, it’s definitely rewarding.
First, I took the Laser Sheen Detangling Spray and sprayed her mane and tail and let it soak for a couple of minutes while I sprayed the rest of her coat. I think went over her coat with a grooming brush to help smooth it in. I slowly detangled her tail and used some extra detangling spray to make sure all the knots are out.
The Farnam Laser Sheen repels dust, dirt, and stains for days after I spray her with this. So, not only does it make her super shiny initially, but it also helps keep her clean.
Then, I let her dry and graze a bit in the sunshine.
While she finished drying on the cross ties, I like to clean the tack. Start by hanging the bridle on the tack hook, and prepare a small bucket filled with 1/2 cup of water. Take a sponge and lightly wet it and use some Leather New Balm.
Then, wipe the leather down with a rag, I like to wipe it pretty strongly to get all the grime out.
Then, use a conditioning treatment like the Leather New Total Care to make the bridle extra-shiny and soft. This avocado-oil based product does a great job of not only restoring the leather, but also protects it from drying and cracking.
The last step in the equine makeover is to use the Laser Sheen Finishing Spray. This is like the extra gloss to make the hair really shine like you’re winning the model class at the Devon Horse Show. I also sprayed some of the finishing spray onto a rag and shined up her ears, eye lids, and muzzle to give her face a little extra glow.
And Ta-Da! There you go… Daphne-Doo is ready for the horse show ring! This 14.1 H chestnut mare is 22 years old, and she surely looks like she’s still “got it!”
