While there are many shades of grey, perhaps even fifty shades (or more), grey is a neutral tone between black and white that symbolizes a sophisticated serenity. Grey is a trending tone in both fashion and home decor for 2019, and we’re excited to show you how to incorporate this beautiful hue into your style with 5 great tips.

- Own a Dappled Grey Horse (j/k- but, not really…) Let’s face it, don’t we all just swoon over a beautiful dappled grey at the horse show? But then, we think about the ‘keeping him/her clean’ situation and cringe… The endless manure stain dilemma is everyone’s nightmare with these ‘majestic colored ‘unicorn’ grey horses, right? They are the easiest to photograph and they stand out well against a sea of dark bays in the hack classes. And, when you find the ‘perfect one’, you don’t even think twice about keeping him or her clean, because they truly become your ‘unicorn’ horse. Dappled grey horses not only catch our eye, but they create the ultimate inspiration for style color palates and the best fashion accessory anyone could ask for!
Meet Iceland. He’s a young horse that’s for sale in the barn with my trainer Jennifer Bieling here in Wellington, Florida. He’s just as beautiful on the inside as he is on the out. He arrived in the United States only recently in late 2018 from Holland, and he’s really enjoying becoming an Amateur Hunter horse this year. So far he’s been champion in the Low Adult Hunters in Pre-circuit, but he’s ready to make his debut at the Winter Equestrian Festival very soon.
2. Accessorize with a grey cape or poncho
This one pictured is from Loft and can be worn as a wrap or a cape. While the winter nights can be chilly in Florida, this is the perfect accessory to wear when those temperatures drop in the evening.
3. Grey-up your shoe game
If you’re like me, neutral colored shoes that fill well are my ‘go-to’. Typically I don’t go too far ‘out of my comfort zone’ when it comes to shoes. Only because unlike so many other fashionistas, I have to go for comfort. As a rider, getting blisters in uncomfortable shoes is a no-go for me. So, I try to keep it simple and comfortable in my footwear. When I come across adorable horse embroidered flats, I definitely indulge!
One of my favorites: Vintage equestrian driving moccasins – I wish they would make them again! They are such a gem.

If you’re a fashion-forward equestrian in the show ring, add some grey and black lizard trim to your next custom boots by Der Dau. These add just the perfect touch of grey!
4. Grey Pants (or Breeches)
Grey pants are a staple. Whether you like a darker shade or a lighter for spring, it’s a classic color both for riding and wearing out to dinner.
(From left to right) The Body Sculpting tights by Goode Rider in ‘Charcoal Heather’ are excellent for riding and lounging around, AG ‘Prima’ are also some of my favorites, and the Equiline Ash Knee Grip Breech are great schooling breeches, too!
5. Decorate with grey hues in your home. Thinking about painting the interior? The Benjamin Moore Color of the Year 2019 is Metropolitan AF-690, a calming and sophisticated grey. Oddly enough, we are painting the interior of our home this year with Classic Grey from Benjamin Moore, a similar feeling but just a bit lighter for our Wellington, Florida equestrian style inspired home.
Whether you’re decorated with black and white equestrian style oversized art, or deciding to paint your interior in a shade of grey, grey hues are light, fresh, and soothing for your home. Below are some ideas for inspiration…
